One more chart showing that global (and domestic) solar installations set a new record in 2022 - and the prediction is that they'll keep setting records in 2023 and beyond!

But as we explained in our original email yesterday, the clean energy transition wont just happen. It took a ton of work and advocacy to pass legislation, pressure local utility commissions, and more — all of which made 2022 a record-setting year for solar and clean energy. Before midnight tomorrow, can you chip in $1.98, $19.80, or whatever you can afford so we can keep fighting next year?

Welcome to our annual charts and graphs summary — Where we try and present some data at the end of the year in a fun and easy to digest fashion.

Before we dive in, we also want to ask you for a year-end donation to support this work. Ok here's the pictures, charts, and graphs!

We start out looking at three trends from 2022 that we think will influence 2023. They are: 1) the war in Ukraine

2) The growing conflict between fossil fueled fascists, and small-d clean energy democrats both globally, and here in the U.S.

And 3) US politics, namely the struggle with Joe Manchin, the lone Senate Democrat who is more loyal to fossil fuels than anything else, and is still the powerful Chair of the Senate Energy Committee. 

Next we look at where the science says we're at in terms of global warming emissions now, and where we're headed.

Global emissions are up, whether you measure them by country or by fuel source:

That means we have very little time or wiggle-room left before we have to start cutting emissions, a lot, and very fast.

Unfortunately, that's not what we're on-track to do, neither globally, nor locally.

Here's global projection:

And here's a domestic projection. This graph was made before the Inflation Reduction Act passed, but the IRA's projected impact is right in the middle, between doing nothing, and doing what President Biden Promised.

Here's a closer look at the domestic projection, from a model after the Inflation Reduction Act was passed. As you can see, it might get us as much as 80% towards Biden's promise, or it might not do much of anything.

So, what do we do to close that gap between projection and reality? Well now that we've shown you we know what we're talking about and have the data to back it up, here's out plan for 2023.

Step 1, take on the fossil fueled fascists head on.

Step 2, disrupt, delay, and disable fossil fuel infrastructure to give clean energy a chance to get there first. And remember, every time we won a victory in 2022, it was right after we engaged in non-violent, direct action.

Step 3, hit the accelerator on clean energy deployment. This will be tricky, because we have to work in a lot of places, and a lot of different ways. That's because, as you can see from this last map, most states aren't welcoming the clean energy transition yet. Many are actively opposing it. We'll need new and creative tactics, as well as a lot more of what we're already good at: advocating in front of and disrupting business as usual at local utility commissions, elected officials, and federal regulators.

So, there you have it:

A recap of the trends from 2022 that we think matter most in 2023; A rundown on the latest science of how much climate change we're still making (too much) and how fast President Biden and other world leaders are proposing to cut emissions (too little, too late); And a bit of our plan for 2023.

But we need to start on new fossil fuel fascist actions in less than a week, to be ready for the second anniversary of the January 6 insurrection. That's not a lot of time to get ready, and honestly, we’re behind on our annual fundraising goals as of today. So if you can chip in a year end gift of $198, that would be awesome and just in time.

To also fight in multiple states, with multiple state governments and utility regulators over the roll-out of the IRA and clean energy investment, that will take a sustained, years-long commitment. $1.98 a week is less than a cup of coffee at Starbucks, and powers our work to hold corporations, including Starbucks, as well as politicians, regulators, and others accountable with disruptive, digital action all year long.
