Some thoughts to ring in the new year

Always a night from old to new!
Night and the healing balm of sleep!
Each morn is New Year’s morn come true,
Morn of a festival to keep.
All nights are sacred nights to make
Confession and resolve and prayer;
All days are sacred days to wake
New gladness in the sunny air.
Only a night from old to new;
Only a sleep from night to morn.
The new is but the old come true;
Each sunrise sees a new year born.

- Helen Hunt Jackson, from her poem "New Year's Morning"

Nourish beginnings, let us nourish beginnings.
Not all things are blest, but the
seeds of all things are blest.
The blessing is in the seed.

- Muriel Rukeyser, from her poem "Elegy in Joy"

The past year recedes like

a chameleon's tongue— a miss,

I am not taken.

Before my mirror, wiped with

the nectaring newness of the year, I am the visage of a boy styling

his life into a poem, resolute

to say more, to do more,

like a semicolon;

- Bryan Okwesili, "Like a Semicolon"
