Hello John, The last few weeks have been incredibly busy as we’ve worked the halls of Congress in Washington, D.C. for Representative McCollum's Boundary Waters Permanent Protection bill. This whole year has been a whirlwind with lots of hard work that leaves us well-positioned for success. |
|
|
This year alone, we have made great strides on federal legislation: - Rep. McCollum’s bill passed through the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee.
-
The Campaign brought 81 people to D.C., including Boundary Waters-area business owners, non-profit partners, youth, and more.
- More than 300 (!) meetings were held in Washington D.C. in pursuit of permanent protection for the Boundary Waters.
-
Our program, Kids for the Boundary Waters, returned for their annual in-person fly-in with over 30 kids from 11 states traveling to our nation’s capital to advocate for the Wilderness.

|
Together we’ve accomplished so much this year, but the Boundary Waters is still in peril.
Together we must protect the Boundary Waters from a foreign mining conglomerate with terrible environmental and human-rights records, and we have a lot on our plate in 2023, including: - Opportunities at the Minnesota State Capitol to protect the Boundary Waters.
- Legal defense on both federal and state levels.
-
Other integral Campaign components including research, outreach, diversity & equity, and education.
- Plus, we are hopeful for a good decision from the U.S. Secretary of Interior on the proposed 20-year mining ban on federal public lands around the Boundary Waters.

Though we did not achieve our most ambitious 2022 goal in passing the federal bill this time, we will doggedly pursue it in the next Congress. As our partners at Outdoor Alliance put it “Conservation bills in particular can take years, even decades, to complete, and every time they get closer to passing, it becomes easier to pass them the next time around. Every time we advocate so hard that these bills approach the finish line, we make the runway a bit smoother for the next time we push.”
