What the Cuban Missile crisis, Able Archer and this moment have in common

ICAN - International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons

, Beatr

Dear Friend --

With only 24 hours left, we are giving one final push to our new action fund for visual actions and stunts against nuclear weapons in 2023. Will you contribute?

Yes, I'll donate

History shows that after very dangerous moments, we get an opportunity to use it for making progress on disarmament and arms control. In 1962, the Cuban missile crisis scared the whole world and shook world leaders. Three years later, countries gathered to stop more countries from developing nuclear weapons by negotiating the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT).

In 1983, at the height of the Cold War, the world got frighteningly close to nuclear war again. Soviet leaders thought the NATO nuclear exercise Able Archer was real and loaded nuclear bombs onto combat planes in order to retaliate. Three years later, Reagan and Gorbachev met in Reykjavik to start unprecedented nuclear disarmament negotiations, agreeing to dismantle around 50’000 nuclear warheads.

That’s why we now have an unprecedented opportunity to finish the job. But we need to scale up and help our campaign around the world get louder. In 2023 we need to start hitting the streets to generate more pressure on decision makers to eliminate nuclear weapons once and for all.

So with 24 hours left to go to reach our CHF 50’000 target, will you help us support the ICAN Rapid Action Fund, which will fund innovative actions, stunts and public activities that will pressure decision makers to take this opportunity and push for nuclear disarmament?

Donate now

These nuclear threats cannot be ignored, or dismissed. This time, we need to go all the way and use this moment to get complete nuclear disarmament

Thank you,
