John,
With 2023 nearly here, I wanted to be sure you saw our email this morning: A publication that serves to bring real-time news to investors called MarketWatch is warning folks that Republicans plan to take the debt ceiling hostage to demand Social Security cuts.
Using the debt ceiling to damage our Social Security system wouldn’t just hurt seniors. The last round of Republican debt ceiling hostage-taking led to a credit downgrade that prolonged the Great Recession, even though the debt ceiling was never breached. MarketWatch reminds Wall Street investors who may be salivating over Social Security cuts that the debt ceiling is: “must-pass legislation that does not authorize new spending but prevents the United States from defaulting on its existing financial obligations.”
Social Security and Medicare did not cause the deficit. Decades of tax cuts for the rich and corporations under Presidents Bush and Trump, along with out-of-control Pentagon spending brought us here. But Republicans only care about deficits when Democrats hold the Presidency―they want to hurt President Biden just like they wanted to hurt Presidents Obama and Clinton, and they don’t care who gets caught in the crossfire.
We have saved Social Security and Medicare over and over again. Republican politicians will never win as long as we stand together. Can you donate $7 today?
Michael’s original email is below―check it out.
Thanks,
Alex Lawson

John,
Look at this headline from MarketWatch:

The article confirms what we’ve heard: Republicans are aiming to use the debt limit to destroy or weaken our Social Security system.
This is a fight that Social Security Works is ready for―as long as we have you by our side. Can you chip in $7 today?

The article quotes a veteran Capitol Hill staffer who says:
Reaching “a reasonable, negotiated settlement with the Republican conference is going to be exponentially more difficult” than it was in 2011.
With Republican leaders dedicated to pleasing the Wall Street CEOs who backed Donald Trump’s plans to destroy Medicare and Medicaid and de-fund Social Security, we will have our work cut out for us. But we CAN win. In fact, we have to.
Before Social Security took effect, 50% of seniors lived in poverty. Today, that number is less than 10%. This is what Republicans want to destroy.
Republicans are planning to take the debt ceiling hostage to force through Mitt Romney’s TRUST Act or similar legislation. Social Security Works President Nancy Altman is quoted in the MarketWatch piece warning that the TRUST Act is “just a way of hiding the ball” to cut Social Security benefits behind closed doors. With your help, we can stop this scheme.
Donate $7 today to save Social Security from Republicans!
Thanks,
Michael Phelan
