Happy New Year Ward 8, 

We have entered into a new year and decade and we are kicking things off at full speed. As we continue to build our city, we must never forget to build on our people. This week, I, along with Councilmembers Cheh and Bonds, introduced the "Equity Employment in High Displacement Risk Zone Initiative Act of 2020."

Every day, I am approached by individuals in the community asking about jobs. This bill creates an employment opportunity training program that is targeted to DC residents who live in high displacement risk zones District-wide. It is an initiative that will establish employment opportunities for DC residents in displacement-risk zones for a career with an average median salary of $56,000.

Initiatives like this will work to ensure that residents across the District who live in high displacement risk zones can continue to afford to live and play in the city they love. This falls especially true to Ward 8 residents who are concerned about being priced out by new development in our ward.

This week, we also celebrated the groundbreaking of a project at the MLK Gateway project, a renovation of the historic retail buildings. Phase one of this project includes the restoration of the historic retail buildings to include a two-story office addition above the retail. The office will be occupied by D.C.-based Enlightened, a leading cyber-technology company, bringing 200 employees from their downtown DC location to Anacostia.

Clarence J. Venable
Violence Intervention and Prevention Workers Protection Act of 2020 

Mr. Clarence Venable was tragically killed in November 2019 outside of the Alliance of Concerned Men, a nonprofit organization, that works with at-risk youth living in high crime areas of DC. Mr. Venable worked for Cure the Streets; they train residents who are credible in their community to work as violence interrupters.

It is tragic that Mr. Venable lost his life when he was working to save the lives of the youth in his community. The legislation as introduced provides enhanced penalties for offenses against a Violence Intervention and Prevention Workers while in the performance of duty. 

The enhanced penalties include for any person who commits an offense against a Violence Intervention and Prevention Worker while engaged in the ordinary course of performing his or her duties at the time of the offense, may be punished by a fine of up to 1½ times the maximum fine otherwise authorized for the offense and may be imprisoned for a term of up to 1½ times the maximum term of imprisonment otherwise authorized by the offense, or both.
Equitable Employment in High Displacement
Risk Zone Initiative Act of 2020

On January 7th, Councilmember White, along with Councilmembers Cheh and Bonds introduced the Equity Employment in High Displacement Risk Zone Initiative Act of 2020. 

This bill creates an employment opportunity training program targeted to DC residents who live in high displacement risk zones across the District. The targeted jobs for the bill require no previous work experience, no on-the-job training, and no college degree but can provide residents with an opportunity for a career in a high demand field that only requires appropriate training and support to be connected jobs.

Time for Change Trade School

On January 4th, Councilmember Trayon White attended a ribbon cutting ceremony for the "Time for Change Trade School" (TFCTS) with Executive Director, Tonya Ridley.  The school is located in Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ, 101 Xenia Street SW.

The TFCTS is offering two classes (morning and evening) of 25 students for Certified Nurse Assistants.

MLK Gateway Project
 Groundbreaking Ceremony
On January 8th, Councilmember Trayon White in collaboration with Mayor Muriel Bowser, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, the Department of Housing and Community Development, the Menkiti Group, LISC, CityFirst Bank, PNC and Enlightened broke ground on the MLK Gateway project.  This project is a renovation of the historic retail buildings at the intersection of Good Hope Road and Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, SE that will bring office, retail, and other neighborhood amenities to Ward 8. 

Phase One of the project, includes the renovation of the historic retail buildings at 1201-1215 Good Hope Road SE, including a two-story office addition above the retail. The office addition of 20,000 square feet will be occupied by D.C.-based Enlightened, a leading cyber-technology company, bringing 200 employees from their downtown DC location to Anacostia.

Phase Two of the project, will consist of a new building construction at 1909-1913 Martin Luther King. Jr. Avenue SE, with street-level retail and multi-story office above.

Ward 8 School Fest
On January 11th, Councilmember Trayon White was one of the sponsors for the Ward 8 School Fest designed to introduce Ward 8 parents and stakeholders to all of the Ward 8 Public, Private and Charter School offerings. 

Ward 8 Clergy & Faith Leaders Breakfast

On January 11th, Councilmember White addressed a full room at Union Temple Baptist Church during the Ward 8 Clergy and Faith Leaders Breakfast. He discussed, among other topics, the importance of the "Displacement Free Zone" bill he introduced that will freeze the property taxes on Ward 8 property owners due to the influx of new development.
In the News

DC Welcomes Its First Go-Go Museum Soon 

Washington, D.C. is preparing to be home to a museum dedicated to Go-Go music, which will be the first of its kind in the city.

The museum is located in Ward 8, in the historic Anacostia neighborhood and will include a café, an event space, an outdoor garden and a venue for performances.

The Go-Go Museum is the result of a joint effort by Check It Enterprises Culture Center, the Go-Go movement, and community advocate, Ronald Moten.

Check It is a non-profit that works towards the goal of creating a safe space and opportunities for young LGBTQ people.

The Go-Go Museum in the District will be dedicated to “the preservation of the cultural artifacts and legacy of the entire Go-Go music scene.”
