Dear John, Today I wrapped up a planning session for 2023 and wanted to communicate a few things to you. As one of our loyal allies, it is important that I keep you in the loop so that our work together to advance, preserve, and restore human rights is as successful as possible. A few challenges that await us in 2023: -
Title 42: There is a real possibility that Title 42, the previous administration's public health law which allowed for the expulsion of migrants during the COVID-19 pandemic, will finally come to an end – restoring some amount of justice and freedom to those who need it most. But, it is not assured yet and WOLA’s experts are already working to ensure that subsequent policies won’t continue to oppress migrants and asylum seekers who need our help.

Regional Migration: It is no longer accurate to say that the epicenter of regional migration in the Americas is located at the U.S.-Mexico border; nor is it accurate that the majority of those who arrive at the U.S’s southern border are only from Mexico and Central America. Throughout Latin America, many countries are shouldering the challenges of migrants arriving from neighboring nations: Venezuelans are fleeing to Colombia, Cubans and Hondurans are fleeing to Mexico. WOLA is at the forefront of the effort to understand the patterns of migration in order to ensure that the United States enacts policies that are fair and just to all, as well as to do everything in our power to support those who leave their home country in search of prosperity and safety elsewhere.

Fighting authoritarianism: The reality is authoritarianism is increasing throughout the region. But, because of the strong and incredible organizations WOLA partners with, we are able to hold the line and stand up against regimes that systematically dismantle human rights and the institutions that support those rights.
