Friend, the latest news out of Afghanistan is devastating. After months of witnessing new restrictions placed on women—including limitations placed on their participation in everyday life, access to education, and now, the right to work for nongovernmental organizations (NGOs)—Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) strongly condemns the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’s erasure of women from public life in the country.
Make no mistake: This ban endangers women and children who will be blocked from accessing essential medical care. Patients already struggle to access care—what will happen if they have nowhere to turn?
In Afghanistan, MSF proudly employs nearly 900 women as doctors, nurses, and other professionals. For the time being, all of MSF's activities have been maintained as our female colleagues continue to work unhindered in the health facilities managed by MSF and the Ministry of Health. This must not change: These women deliver high-quality, free medical care every single day. We need MORE female doctors in Afghanistan, not fewer—and with lives on the line, we urgently need your help, friend.
We must be blunt: If women are prevented from working in health care facilities, and women in Afghanistan can only be treated by women, all women will be unable to access health care.
Already, the medical system in Afghanistan struggles to meet people’s most basic needs. That’s why MSF’s work is such a lifeline: at Khost Maternity Hospital, 90 percent of our medical staff are women who help deliver 1,800 babies every month. If these policies continue, expectant mothers will have nowhere to go.
In 2022 alone, MSF teams in Afghanistan admitted 71,000 patients to the emergency room, treated 7,000 children in therapeutic feeding centers, treated 9,500 measles patients, and delivered 35,000 babies. We simply cannot allow that work to be banned because of abhorrent and unjust directives from the Afghan authorities.
--- All gifts given, up to $1,000,000, will be doubled through 11:59 p.m. EST on December 31. Every dollar you give will be matched with $1. Gifts received after the match has been met will not be matched but will be used where needed most.
