[1]NNU - Medicare for All!

[1]2022 Year in Review

For our last email of 2022, we asked our team to share their top five
accomplishments from the year.

Together, here’s just some of what you helped us accomplish this year to
build support for Medicare for All in Congress, hold the corporate health
care industry accountable, and grow our movement for transformative
change:

Celebrated the first-ever hearing on Medicare for All in the U.S. Senate

Led by Senator Sanders as chair of the Budget Committee, the first ever
hearing on Medicare for All took place in the U.S. Senate in May on the
same day as the bill introduction. Our very own Executive Director, Bonnie
Castillo, testified on behalf of nurses in patients in support of Medicare
for All.

Launched the 3rd Medicare for All Leadership School

Our 3rd ever cohort of the Leadership School kicked off in mid-June with
several dozen committed nurses and community members across the country.
Students in the program committed to an intensive, 3-month long program to
become trained on the skills necessary to be successful grassroots leaders
in their workplaces and communities in the fight for Medicare for All.

We were so proud to successfully graduate 24 students from the program at
the end of August!

Mobilized and trained over 1,100 volunteers to participate in the Patients
Over Profits campaign

We had over 1,100 people sign up to volunteer on this campaign over the
last several months — and thanks to their efforts, over 70 candidates and
elected officials from around the country have now taken the pledge.

Forced CVS to respond to our movement’s demands

This year, we turned up the heat in our corporate campaign calling on CVS
Health to stop bankrolling anti-Medicare for All efforts.

On May 11, NNU President and RN, Jean Ross joined CVS Health’s virtual
annual shareholder meeting to ask their executives directly: Which side
are you on?

CVS was forced to respond on the spot then, as well as following our
action in Las Vegas where we rallied outside one of their flagship stores
and hand delivered 35,000 petition signatures.

Our action was covered by multiple local news outlets, and CVS was forced
to respond when asked for comment. Sadly, they repeated their same
inadequate stance from earlier in the year, but our collective organizing
against CVS Health this year was a powerful corporate campaign.

Mobilized to pass historic single-payer health care in California

This year, we continued to build momentum for single-payer health care in
California — also known as CalCare.

In 2022, we successfully passed CalCare through two Assembly committees
and moved it onto the Assembly floor. Just four years earlier, we couldn’t
move this bill past the Speaker’s desk, and this year, we not only had
Speaker Anthony Rendon’s vocal support for CalCare, we had reached the
Assembly floor.

Despite this momentum, lawmakers chose to pull the bill before it could be
voted on — but this was a huge milestone, and we got to work right away
preparing for our next window of opportunity to pass this bill.

We successfully helped elect nine CalCare Champions to the State Senate
and Assembly — setting the stage for a historic amount of support for
CalCare in the capitol this upcoming session!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This year has been a WILD ride. But, despite everything, we were able to
accomplish so much in 2022 thanks to people like you stepping up and taking
action with us.

We are immensely proud of the work that we’ve done together, and all of
the incredible volunteers who have joined us.

Thank you for all your support and efforts, and we can’t wait to keep
growing this movement with you in 2023.

Happy New Year,

Nurses’ Campaign to Win Medicare for All
