Friend, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) leaps into action when crisis strikes, putting Aid First for our patients who urgently need medical care.
That’s why, when cholera broke out in Lebanon in October, MSF worked with the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health to deploy a massive vaccination campaign to curb the spread of the disease and immunize some of the most vulnerable. In the first three days alone, MSF vaccinated nearly 15,000 people.
Our swift action saved lives from this terrible disease. And make no mistake: MSF’s ability to respond to crises at a moment’s notice depends entirely upon our generous donor community.
MSF-USA is entirely funded by independent donors. That means when an emergency breaks out, our teams don’t have to cut through red tape or contend with politics or special interests—potentially losing precious moments that could cost lives.
Caline Rehayem, MSF deputy medical coordinator in Lebanon, says that the vaccination campaign has been prioritizing crowded communities without proper access to water, conditions in which cholera can rapidly spread.
“Our teams are going from door to door in neighborhoods, visiting homes, shops, and camps actively seeking out people to get vaccinated and to raise awareness on the importance of vaccination against this highly contagious disease,” Caline reports.
The situation unfolding in Lebanon is a perfect storm of conditions for a dangerous disease like cholera to spread.
Refugees from Syria and Palestine are living in inadequate conditions during prolonged periods of displacement. Critical infrastructure, including water, sanitation, and waste management, is collapsing. Remote and underserved areas rely on ponds and lakes for drinking water due to unreliable water sources—a major avenue for cholera to rapidly spread.
