Dear John,

Firstly, Happy New Year in advance from everyone at Health Poverty Action.

For many people their New Year's resolution will be to get more involved in causes they care about. That's why we're inviting you to support our Women's Empowerment Appeal by joining the Health Poverty Action Community and helping to build a healthier, more prosperous world for all.

The Health Poverty Action Community is a global network of people who contribute to ending health inequality by supporting our work. We work long-term; building trusting relationships with communities, health workers and activists to effect lasting change. This means that reliable income is vital.

You can join by making a regular monthly donation; you will receive special updates on our work and further opportunities to get involved with the cause!

We work with communities excluded from healthcare services, whether this be because of their ethnicity and culture or even where they live.

In Guatemala we work with Indigenous Maya communities. From supporting engagement with state healthcare providers, to ensuring that health messages are delivered in languages people can understand, we make sure their needs are respected and understood by the Ministry of Health.

In communities that live days away from a clinic, we have secured vehicles and even donkeys to transport patients and deliver medical supplies. In Myanmar, volunteers and workers continue to provide people with healthcare despite the political instability that continually threatens this work.

Health Poverty Action advocates global change to end systems of oppression. For us, solutions to global poverty and inequality must address the root causes.

We speak out against unjust trading practices that keep people in poverty and promote global solidarity to end inequality. We speak on issues others choose not to; exposing the 'war on drugs' for persecuting the most vulnerable and driving global poverty and climate injustice. We are unifying climate and drug activists to appreciate their common goals and we are joining forces to prevent the unequal distribution of vaccines.

It is not only in our campaigning work that we act on challenging issues. We know that women’s empowerment is essential for health justice. Women around the world are denied fundamental rights that impact their health and livelihoods.

We work with women who are securing sexual and reproductive healthcare services and ensuring that women and girls have control over their lives. From preventing school drop-out due to early marriage and pregnancy to challenging harmful stereotypes, ensuring that women have knowledge and power over their health is critical.

In the video below, Community Worker, Sowda Gedi Ali speaks about her work supporting women and communities in Kenya, alongside Health Poverty Action.

Tackling both the root causes and the symptoms of global inequality is a huge undertaking. Whether you are an activist, a health worker, a community volunteer or someone who makes a regular donation, together we can build a global community of people dedicated to unravelling the causes of poor health, poverty and inequality.

Warm wishes,

Siaffa Bunduka
