This year, the epidemic of book bans and curriculum bans has spread out of control, with school boards and legislatures across the country proudly resorting to censorship. At the same time authors, professors, journalists, teachers, and civic leaders have withdrawn from vital conversations for fear of reprisals for what they say and write.
As a life-long defender of free speech, it can be hard to recognize my country. But the fight is not lost. With your support, PEN America will continue to sound the alarm on censorship, to resist laws and bans that silence, and to advocate for citizens who know that the right to open discourse is fundamental to democracy.
