Dear Friend,
I’ll never forget the day over twenty patients were rushed into our emergency room with stab and gunshot wounds in Bangui, Central African Republic. Lives were on the line, time was running out—and I had to make a decision.
In that moment, I knew we needed to save as many lives as possible and prioritize the patients who most urgently needed medical attention.
As an emergency physician and medical advisor for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), these are the kinds of high-pressure situations we’re trained for. In the face of war, deadly disease outbreaks, and natural disasters, our nearly 63,000 staff members deliver lifesaving medical care worldwide. No matter how challenging the conditions, we find a way to put our patients first.
But, we can’t do this alone. Individual supporters like you allow us to provide rapid-response care when it’s needed most.
After war broke out, I traveled to Ukraine in March of this year to provide mass casualty training to hospital staff in Lviv. I taught them the very same skills I used that night in the emergency room in Bangui. After a weekend missile strike just outside the city, we practiced assessing patients in situations where multiple wounded people needed medical attention at the same time.
Whether it's the Central African Republic, Ukraine, Pakistan, or Haiti, we go wherever we’re needed to put Aid First and save lives. This is exactly why I became an emergency physician, and why I work for MSF.
I promise you: any gift you make will have a powerful impact. I’ve witnessed it firsthand. Thank you for helping us save lives.
Sincerely,
Dr. Edward Chu
Emergency Physician and Medical Advisor
