Dear friend,
As 2022 comes to an end, we want to say a big thank you for your support and to celebrate all that we have achieved together this year to campaign against unjust debt.
Thank you for every petition you’ve signed, every event you’ve attended, every social media post you’ve shared and every donation you’ve given us. Each action counts and we are truly grateful and inspired by your continued determination and passion to fight for a better world for all.
Looking back, we want to pull out five highlights from campaigning together this year:
1. Unleashed public pressure on BlackRock
We unleashed waves of public pressure on BlackRock to cancel Zambia’s debt in solidarity with Zambian campaigners. You lobbied MPs, signed a petition to the CEO and jammed up BlackRock’s phone lines. The negotiations are still ongoing but we have made sure that BlackRock can’t ignore the demands of Zambian people. And this month, UK development minister admitted that legislation to compel private lenders to cancel debt needs to be considered.
2. Won debt cancellation for Ukraine
We won our campaign with the Ukrainian social movement Sotsialniy Rukh, the Ukraine Solidarity Campaign and Another Europe to cancel Ukraine’s debts! This frees up billions of dollars for the Ukrainian people to address the humanitarian crisis and costs of the Russian invasion. Thank you for signing our petition, sharing our articles and helping us to spread the word. You helped to push this issue up the political agenda.
3. Raised the alarm about climate and debt
Widespread flooding in Pakistan demonstrated the devastating connection between the debt and climate crisis. Your heard directly from Farooq Tariq in Pakistan at our webinar on debt and climate. You signed our petition calling for debt cancellation and climate reparations and you marched on the streets in solidarity at the Global Day of Action on climate justice in November.
A loss and damage facility was finally agreed at this year’s COP27 after decades of campaigning from the global movement. The facility still needs funds but for now, this is a great step forward in the fight for climate reparations and prevent more debt to address the climate crisis.
4. National activist gathering
We met together for our first in-person national activist gathering since the pandemic. We heard from our keynote speaker Mikaela Loach, launched our new debt and colonialism political education project, made placards for the climate justice demonstration and came up with ideas to build the collective power of people in debt. Thank you for coming and doing your part to build the movement together.
5. Building the collective power of people in debt
Our Together Against Debt groups of people in debt have won a commitment from Lambeth Council in London for housing repairs to prevent the build-up of energy debt, launched a campaign to cancel school meal debt in Glasgow and fighting to end bailiff use in Manchester.
Across the UK, energy debt is now soaring at £2.1 billion because of expensive energy bills and you joined in the campaign by signing our petition to cancel energy debt to give people a fighting chance this winter.

We are so excited and inspired by your support for our campaigns. It's been a tough year for so many people and yet we’ve been able to make real inroads in fighting unjust debt. There is still much for us to do but I believe that by campaigning together and taking collective action we are a force to be reckoned with. Your passion, support and action are needed more than ever.
Thank you so much for your involvement in our campaigns this year and we look forward to campaigning with you in 2023.
With our very best wishes for the new year!
Heidi and the whole team at Debt Justice
