Cholera continues to spread—taking advantage of disruptions caused by the ongoing political instability and violence.

The PIH team has cared for more than 3,000 people sick with cholera, and the 80-bed cholera treatment unit at PIH’s teaching hospital in Mirebalais filled so quickly that we opened treatment units at six other health centers before also opening emergency tent-based units.

The most affected age group continues to be children younger than five-years-old, as widespread childhood malnutrition has left toddlers in Haiti particularly vulnerable to the fast-moving disease.

If left untreated, cholera can kill in as few as 24 hours.

Now, good news: The vaccination campaign has started in the Mirebalais region in central Haiti, where, as of seven days ago, staff had already reached more than 4,900 residents and are expected to ultimately deliver a single dose of the oral vaccine, Euvichol-plus, to all eligible residents—about 105,390 people. The vaccine is currently being rationed because of a depleted global stockpile.

This emergency vaccination campaign will save lives, with the eventual goal of stopping the outbreak entirely.

This emergency campaign is only possible because of years of investment in the health system in central Haiti. Many of the caregivers currently performing vaccinations joined our team during the successful 2010 cholera response. In between, they were providing care, healing their neighbors, and building a brighter future.

You can provide immediate assistance to these caregivers, and the people they serve in Haiti and around the world. Your donation will be tripled up to $1,000,000 by a group of generous donors! Any amount helps, so please, consider contributing now: [link removed]

In solidarity,

The PIH Team
