If 2019 taught us anything, it’s that you can be in high school or middle school and change the world. The Global Climate Strike happened because teenagers refused to be silent while their generation was sold out by billionaires, and it became the largest climate mobilization ever.

And in 2020, it needs to happen again, but bigger. Enormous wildfires are turning Australia into a sci-fi dystopia, displacing First Nations and killing literally billions of animals. The November election could bring enormous hope, or an even darker future.

That’s why Sunrise is holding our biggest summit for high schoolers and middle schoolers ever next month. We want to bring together hundreds of teenagers to learn key organizing skills, build relationships with each other, and lead the decade of the Green New Deal.

Here are the details.

  • The 2020 High School and Middle School Summit is on February 15th-17th in Washington DC. Group housing and food will be provided, and need-based transportation scholarships are available.

  • The deadline to apply is Thursday January 16th, and you’ll hear back by January 17th so you can make plans to come.

(If you’re not in high school or middle school - please invite someone who is! You don’t have to be in the movement already to join the summit; new people who are excited to jump right in are welcome!)

We need the leadership of young people now because the younger you are, the higher the chances are that you’ll be affected by climate disaster, and the longer you’ll have to be in this fight.

Not only that, I believe in the power of high schoolers - and middle schoolers - to transform our political system. It’s happening already in our movement.

Amalia, who organizes in Massachusetts got her GED online so she could drop out of school and organize full time. Jordan in Maryland slept in a boat in her school’s parking lot to show what the future may hold if we don’t fight. Lily stood up to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, one of the most powerful people in the country, to demand he take serious climate action.

At the summit, everyone will be trained in key organizing skills like recruitment, team building, strategic social media, art building, and action planning so they can leave ready to lead a climate strike.

The deadline to apply to be a part of the summit is January 16th. Apply here, and I’ll see you there.

See you soon,

Abby
