As a survivor of gun violence and now a trauma surgeon, I’ve been working at the intersection of medicine, public health, and public policy to provide the best medical treatment -- Prevention!
At the age of 17, my life changed forever.
After a high school football game, I was nearly killed after being struck in the throat with a .38 caliber bullet.
I went from being a healthy high school teenager to collateral damage.
But I was one of the lucky ones.
I was given a second chance at life.
It turns out that the worst moment of my life was also the most impactful as it led me to working tirelessly to give other people the same second chance I was given.
As a trauma surgeon, I’ve come to realize that while the work we do clinically is so important, the work beyond the bedside is just as critical if we are to tackle this from a public health perspective.

While my team does our best to save lives and treat injuries, the destruction caused by assault weapons decimates the human body.
These military-grade weapons are so powerful, they literally blow holes into human bodies, liquifying organs and pulverizing bones.
Sometimes, children’s bodies are left so unrecognizable that parents can only identify them through DNA tests.
I wish I didn’t have to paint this gruesome picture for you -- but I need you to understand the horror that assault weapons cause. They are not the average gun-related injuries and they have no business being in the hands of everyday civilians.
That’s why I’m working with BAWN to END gun violence, BAN the assault weapons that I’ve seen tear families apart beyond recognition, and protect our communities.
