• VICTORY on The FDA Modernization Act. This landmark legislation eliminates the requirement for animal testing for all new drug development programs. There are millions of animals used for screening experimental drugs, yet those tests yield little for patients in the form of safety screening or new treatments or cures.
• VICTORY on the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act. This law halts the trade in fins for soup, requiring the capture of a shark and hacking off the fins to sell them in commerce. It is estimated that there are more than 70 million sharks are maimed and killed a year for their fins. Thanks to this work, shark fin soup is off the menu in the United States.
• VICTORY on the Big Cat Public Safety Act. This measure bans breeding of big cats, mainly African lions and tigers, for use in the pet trade and as showpieces at roadside zoos. This law closes the door on this sort of tawdry exploitation of animals and allows us to focus on protecting the endangered big cats in their native habitats.

But, as you know, John, we have so much more work to get done in the coming year. Animal Wellness Action has big plans to:

• Stop the illegal poaching of bears in North America to supply the trade in bear bile, taken from the bladders of bears for Traditional Chinese Medicine.
• Stop the transport of horses for slaughter for human consumption and finally retire the carriage horses in New York City, San Antonio and other cities where geriatric and already broken-down horses are conscripted to pull heavy loads in traffic-choked streets.
• Create an Animal Cruelty Crimes section at the U.S. Department of Justice to enforce all of our anti-cruelty laws.
