Lauren Underwood For Congress [[link removed]]
Hi John —
As we reach the end of 2022, I’ve been spending a lot of time reflecting on my first four years in Congress.
When I was elected in 2018, I became the youngest Black woman ever elected to Congress. Election Day 2018 marked almost 50 years to the day that Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman ever elected to Congress, and so in my speech that night, I made a promise to my community and to myself that like Congresswoman Chisholm, I’d be “unbought and unbossed.”
And after four years in Congress, I’m so proud to say that I’ve kept that promise.
In 2019, I was sworn in to the most diverse Congress in the history of our nation, and I worked tirelessly to ensure that we made the progress my community was counting on.
In my first term, I worked with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get things done — from lowering the cost of generic insulin to passing the Protecting Moms who Served Act, the first piece of legislation from my Momnibus Act.
In my second term, we moved quickly to address the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure folks got the relief they needed to make it through that challenging time with the American Rescue Plan. And I’m so proud that this package included my bill, the Health Care Affordability Act, which cut health care costs and premiums for working families everywhere. And as a result, more Americans have health coverage now than ever before.
But our work didn’t stop there. Over the last two years, we’ve passed historic legislation to lower prescription drug prices, address rising costs, fight climate change, create good-paying jobs, and so much more.
In my first two terms, I’ve had ten pieces of legislation signed into law — and I’m just getting started.
The work ahead won’t be easy with the House majority in Republicans’ hands, but just like Congresswoman Chisholm, I won’t give up. I’ll continue to be unbought and unbossed as a member of Democratic leadership in the new year and I’ll never stop fighting for families everywhere: for an economy where everyone has access to opportunity; for an end to the gun violence epidemic; and for every person’s right to quality, affordable health care. But I can’t do it alone.
So John, I’m humbly asking you to chip in to support our work ahead of our important end-of-year deadline this Saturday. Together, I know we can continue to make the progress families are counting on.
