Dear John,

As 2022 concludes, I am reflecting on the numerous threats facing the world today, as well as the many opportunities we have to create a better future.

According to our flagship report, Freedom in the World, which will mark its 50th edition this spring, more than one-third of the world’s population lives under authoritarian rule, and political rights and civil liberties have declined for 16 straight years.

Democracy hangs in the balance. Will you help Freedom House shine a light on the threats to freedom and support frontline activists?

Authoritarian regimes, such as Russia, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Cuba continue their crackdown on dissent, stifling political opposition, civil society, and independent media, and committing brazen acts of aggression against their own citizens. As seen in the United States, even the world’s democracies find their democratic norms and values under threat.

Freedom House has sounded the alarm on democracy’s retreat and amplified the voices of courageous individuals standing up to defend freedom.

The coming years bring an opportunity to reverse the rising tide of authoritarianism and solidify a democratic future.

We’ve all watched as the Russian invasion of Ukraine set off a humanitarian crisis. Freedom House immediately acted, providing emergency assistance to activists and ensuring the safety and security of journalists and Ukrainians on the frontlines so they can continue to fight.

The ongoing protests taking place in China, Iran and elsewhere in the world, are manifestations of people’s outrage resulting from decades of oppression and brutality. Their strength and perseverance give me hope for the future of democracy.
