Dear friend,

When I was in prison, every New Year's Eve I was focused on my goals for the coming year. It was counting another year down. It was hard, but I kept it positive around the new year.

After 10 years behind bars, I was granted clemency in 2001. This is my 21st year of my second chance — and I don't take it lightly at all. My commutation was beyond a blessing. It's beyond what I can describe.

Will you help FAMM give more people access to their dreams by giving a gift before December 31 at midnight? [link removed] [[link removed]]

By funding FAMM, you fund second chances like mine, where people get a chance to make their communities stronger and safer.

I know all about second chances — not just because I got one, but also because of my work since I got out. I earned my master's degree in social work on drug treatment alternatives to prison, and I own a behavioral health and substance abuse facility in Kansas. For years I was afraid to dream what I wanted, what I could be.

Now I come to work every day and have to pinch myself to believe it's for real. I want more people to get to realize their dreams because of a second chance.

For more than three decades, FAMM has united the voices of affected families, the formerly incarcerated, and a range of stakeholders and advocates to fight for a more fair and effective justice system. FAMM has led the fight to reform extreme mandatory sentencing laws and to promote rehabilitation and dignity for all people in prison, 94 percent of whom will return to our neighborhoods one day — like me.

This New Year's Eve, friends are coming over to my house and I'm making a Caesar salad from scratch and cooking a big steak — just the way I want to spend it.

Will you help more people spend their New Year’s Eve at home with people they love by giving to FAMM today? [link removed] [[link removed]]
