Dear John,

Freelance work offers the flexibility to develop one’s own schedule, work on different projects, and build new skills and experiences. But for many freelancers, the cost of flexible hours and autonomy has been instability, late payments, lack of benefits, and vulnerability to discrimination and harassment.

Thanks to advocacy and organizing by freelancer workers, we are building a movement to win freelancers the rights and protections that all workers deserve.

Are you a freelancer? We want to hear from you about what issues you face in your work, and what kinds of policies might help address your needs.

Starting today, legislation we worked to pass with the Freelancers Union to extend anti-discrimination and harassment protections to freelancer workers is in effect.

Freelancers now have the ability to turn to the Human Rights Commission as a resource when they face harassment or discrimination of any kind. The Commission will investigate and help hold employers accountable.

Winning protections against discrimination and harassment is a fantastic next step. But we can’t stop there.

Freelance work is on the rise, as is the movement to establish rights for freelance workers. In 2017, we worked with the Freelancers Union to pass the Freelance Isn’t Free Act -- first-of-its-kind legislation to ensure that freelance workers are paid on time and in full. Since the law went into effect, hundreds of freelancers have recouped millions of dollars in owed wages.

But we still have more to do to ensure that the rights workers fought for and won in the 20th century, like minimum pay, job security, and paid time off, apply to workers in the 21st.

Not a freelancer, but know someone who is? Forward the survey [[link removed]] .

Looking forward to sharing the results of the survey and our plan to move forward on policy initiatives to help freelance workers get the rights and protections they deserve.

Brad

P.S. To make this survey successful, we need to reach as many people as possible. Please forward the survey [[link removed]] to friends and colleagues who do freelance work so that we can learn from their experiences.
