Hi John – We are gearing up for the fight to finally pass an assault weapons ban in Washington, a policy that has been proposed in the legislature for seven years in a row. I’ve been asked a lot recently why I think this time is different, so I wanted to share my answer with all of you.
I believe this progress is really possible now because the people have never stopped demanding action from our politicians. Year after year after year, voters have supported gun violence prevention at the ballot, passing three comprehensive statewide ballot measures and electing gun responsibility champions up and down the ballot.
Those elections really matter. Because voters sent GVP champions to office, we passed high-capacity magazine restrictions in the legislature last year, a victory six years in the making. And because of voters, we have strengthened our gun responsibility majorities in Olympia in transformative ways. This year, several new candidates proudly ran on gun violence prevention and won. Those victories mean we have an even stronger coalition of elected leaders who are committed to getting the job done.
So I mean it when I say that I believe this is our year. But we won’t be able to get this job done alone. Right now, we have an incredible match opportunity to help us meet our year-end fundraising goal. A longtime supporter is doubling every gift given between now and December 31st, which means your gift will go three times as far in supporting our lifesaving work. Please, donate $5 today to help keep our schools and communities safe.
Thank you,
Renée (she/her)
