In exactly 100 days, young people and adults across the country will come together for three powerful days of climate action. April 22, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, will launch a three day climate strike uniting organizers across the country in our demand for climate action. Youth activists have announced their plans to build on the momentum of the largest youth-led climate mobilization on September 20th, 2019, when 650,000 people across the United States led strikes to call on elected officials to rise up and address the climate crisis.
The 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, will launch of one of the most powerful civic actions for environmental protection in our history, providing an opportunity to listen to Indigenous people’s wisdom, serving as an invitation to commit to making climate action a top priority.
Thursday, April 23 is a day of community action. Young people on college campuses will be demanding their schools divest from fossil fuels while adults will target financial institutions to do the same. Voter registration drives and events will also be happening throughout the country.
On Friday, April 24, millions of people will take the streets to strike. This is the day to demonstrate our unity and collective power. Led by youth, we are calling on everyone who can to strike from school or work to join us.
These efforts are led by a youth climate strike coalition that has come together to collaborate on the #StrikeWithUs campaign. The youth strike coalition, coordinated by Future Coalition, includes the nine leading youth-led climate organizations: Divest Ed, Earth Guardians, Earth Uprising, Extinction Rebellion Youth, International Indigenous Youth Council, Fridays For Future USA, Sunrise Movement, US Youth Climate Strike, and Zero Hour.
This is an intergenerational and intersectional movement, and will require all of us standing together to use our collective voices and power to demand immediate climate action. Youth and adults, institutional and grassroots organizations, climate-focused and social justice groups will once again come together as a unified front to demand the change we need to save and protect our lives.
Addressing climate change must be at the top of every voters’ minds as we head to vote in the 2020 election, and the three days of Earth Day strikes will begin the countdown.
The national events from April 22 to 24 are an open invitation to anyone who shares our belief that we must choose the future of humanity over money and power. We hope you will #StrikeWithUs.
