Just six states. That’s right, just SIX!
That’s the tiny number of states that stand between us and a disastrous Article V Constitutional Convention – an event unprecedented in U.S. history that could mean major constitutional chaos.
John, we have no choice but to immediately step up our grassroots response to defeat this effort. That’s why I’m rushing this alert to you and every member of Common Cause before our critical year-end deadline in two days.
Many constitutional experts believe this is the least known but greatest present threat to our democracy – and it’s being organized right now, behind closed doors and out of the public eye.
Wealthy special interest groups like the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) are spending big money to lobby state lawmakers, demanding they vote to ratify the convening of an Article V Convention to radically reshape the U.S. Constitution.
If allowed to succeed – unelected, unaccountable delegates will have a chance to write their far-right-wing agenda into our Constitution.
Those who want to move an Article V Convention talk about shredding First Amendment protections... gutting environmental regulations... rolling back civil rights advances... and enshrining far-right economics as permanent fiscal policy – that will gut Medicare, Medicaid, and other safety-net programs.
MOST FRIGHTENING OF ALL: if just six more states sign on, the Koch network, the Mercers, corporate funders, and their extremist allies will reach the two-thirds supermajority required to convene the convention they need to tear apart the U.S. Constitution.
So far, we’ve been able to stop them in a number of key states. BUT... given the political events of the past year and the frightening rise of the right wing, we must now redouble our efforts.
That’s why I’m urging you to immediately help ramp up our state-by-state battle to block and rescind calls for an Article V Convention. Can you chip in $3 or more today – before our final year-end budget deadline?
Thanks to the support of members like you, we’ve already proven we can fight the extremists and win. Common Cause activists have successfully rolled back calls for an Article V Convention in Colorado, New Hampshire, Delaware, New Mexico, Maryland, and Nevada. And more recently in New Jersey and Illinois.
Over and over, we’ve proven that our state-by-state grassroots organizing works – and that as long as we keep fighting, we’ll keep winning.
We must not – and will not – let these extremists rewrite our Constitution.
