When we hear from parents and caregivers who have loved ones struggling with addiction, they often tell a story about uncertainty, stigma and obstacles to effective care – all things counterproductive to recovery and healing.

Tonia, a parent advocate and coach, recalls her journey:

“Like most kids his age, my son was very active and enjoyed spending time with his friends. But in middle school, he became frustrated and struggled with low self-esteem. We worked with a child psychologist, but we didn't know that he had begun misusing prescription opiates to numb his pain.

I spent countless hours on fruitless searches and needed emergency resources to protect my son. I vowed to do all I could to help him, but the process was impossible to navigate, and my entire family was falling apart.

When families are in crisis, they don't need judgment or shame. They need someone to hold their hand and guide them through the feelings of isolation, helplessness and despair we feel when facing the disease of addiction.
