To our 350 Brooklyn Community:
As 2022 winds down, we look back with awe at all that we accomplished together. It was a breakthrough year on climate. The IRA’s commitment of $369 billion to Energy Security and climate change programs, though flawed, is a testament to our movement’s growing power. Closer to home, we’ve done so much to expand 350Brooklyn’s outreach and heighten our impact, recapped in this spirit-lifting video by our own Ella Ryan. Here’s some of what we’ve done:
Engagement
- 800 newsletter sign ups, a new welcome video and new monthly orientation sessions
- Nine new Climate Check podcast episodes, reaching listeners in 26 countries
- Our Media team put out 23 newsletters and launched an online ‘zine, Parts per Million
-
Power Hour led a year of bi-weekly calls to legislators on an array of climate issues
State and City Action
- Worked closely with NY Renews and Climate Can’t Wait to pass climate legislation.
- Developed working relationships with many city and state elected officials – several now seek our input and collaboration on climate issues
- Delivered powerful written and in person testimony numerous times to the City Council and New York State’s Climate Action Council.
- Promoted the $4.2 billion Environmental Bond Act, with 81% of NYC voting yes.
Taking it to the Streets
- Stop the Money Pipeline workgroup joined in-your-face events and led an exuberant “Blame Wall Street'' parade from bank to bank in Brooklyn, joined by Bill McKibben.
- Joined our many allies like Food & Water Watch, etc. to shut down Manchin’s Dirty Deal, tell BlackRock to stop investing in fossil fuels and support NYC Local Law 97.
- 350BK Families organized organized creative kid-friendly activities to show decision makers just how high the stakes are
- Our Plastic Free group promoted city and state legislation to curtail plastic use
All of this and more was accomplished with only one part-time staff member and the dedicated hard work of hundreds of volunteers. In 2023 we are going to do more, including pushing for a package of state climate bills; fighting fossil fuel infrastructure and subsidies; and expanding the impact of our many projects.
In May we had a great 5K run fundraiser in Prospect Park, but we do need more to grow our staff and our impact.
Consistent support is so crucial: can you give $10 a month or an end of the year gift? We are so grateful to your commitment to a fossil free future. Donate here! See you in 2023!
