Here are my favorite projects of the year

Dear Email,

2022 was a big year for AMP and the movement for Palestine as a whole. It’s impossible to go over all the work we’ve done this year in one email, but I wanted to share with you some of my highlights of the year, so here’s my top 5 list:

1. #FreeHala Campaign

It’s no secret that Israel has blatantly discriminatory practices against Americans of Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim descent, and this year’s killing of Palestinian Americans Shireen Abu Akleh and Omar Assad by Israeli forces further highlighted their utter disregard for the lives of Palestinian Americans. That’s why when we received news that Israeli forces took 22-year-old Hala Salameh as she tried to enter Jerusalem, we went straight to work. Within hours we had communicated with local and federal officials, reached out to the press who did a full story on her detention, and reached out to the State Department about her case. Within a few days, Hala was released to her family.

2. First-ever flag raising in Chicago

We held the first-ever Palestinian flag-raising event at the Federal Plaza in the city of Chicago this June, with hundreds in attendance and a Friday sermon delivered by Imam Omar Suleiman. The event was as inspirational as it was symbolically powerful, galvanizing our community and renewing our spirit of struggle for Palestinian freedom.

3. #GazaUnderAttack Campaign with Gaza Way

When Israeli forces attacked Gaza this summer, killing dozens of people including children, and injuring countless others, we swung into action with our #GazaUnderAttack campaign. We posted social media content that sheds light on the atrocities that Israel committed in Gaza, including on-the-ground coverage, and highlighted the personal stories of those most impacted. We brought out thousands of people to protest US complicity in Israel’s attack on Gaza by organizing demonstrations in major cities across the country, including DC, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Dallas. In our DC protest, We unveiled the ceremonial “Gaza way” street sign on the block of the Israeli embassy.

4. Marvel Campaign

News broke this year that Disney would be featuring an Israeli Mossad agent as a superhero in an upcoming Marvel film. We organized and made sure our community's objection was understood with a viral social media campaign that generated nearly 22,000 petition signatures demanding the character’s cancellation. We then met with Disney along with a coalition of partners to communicate our objections directly and make sure our voices were heard. We are committed to this campaign until Disney does the right thing.

5. U.S. Visa Waiver Program

Throughout 2022 we advocated against Israel’s inclusion in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, which would grant Israelis special privileges when visiting the United States. We had several meetings with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as well as the State Department and shared an action alert urging Secretary Mayorkas NOT to admit Israel to the Visa Waiver Program. We also released a petition calling on Secretary Blinken to stop the effort to admit Israel into the program, which our Advocacy and Executive Directors hand-delivered to the State Department as they discussed the issue with the Office of Israeli and Palestinian Affairs (NEA/IPA). In a major victory for our campaign, news leaked this year suggesting Israel was unlikely to be admitted into the program.

It feels like we were only just talking about our plans for 2022 and what we hoped to accomplish this year together. Here we are, proud of what we accomplished together and looking forward to what we can do next year. Support AMP today with a tax-deductible contribution and let’s make 2023 the best year for Palestine yet.

Sincerely,

Dr. Hatem Bazian
