Chanel Riser’s story is just one example of how our ID work changes lives. Chanel is a Black trans woman living in Detroit who had hit a dead end trying to obtain an ID that reflected her chosen name and gender.

Chanel was referred to VoteRiders for help, which is when she met Tracy, our Detroit organizer. Tracy went down to the courthouse with Chanel and did not take no for an answer. We stayed with Chanel every step of the way, covering all the fees and expenses and making sure she had transportation to get to her (numerous!) appointments, until her name was legally changed.

She told us that now that her name matches her ID, it felt like a weight had been lifted. “I’ll be more comfortable,” she said. “Once your pronouns are on your ID, there’s nothing to worry about.”

Getting Chanel her ID took a lot of time, resources, and effort. As a nonprofit organization, VoteRiders relies on the generosity of our donors to power all our work.
