Save Our Hospital Inc. to Hold Information Event
Save Our Hospital Inc., an organization formed to oppose the sale of the New Hanover Regional Medical Center, will hold a public information session on January 21 to discuss the downside of losing public ownership of the hospital. The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners in September passed an "intent to sell" resolution, claiming that it was just a first step to enable them to "explore options." Save Our Hospital contends that health care research across the United States demonstrates that selling publicly owned hospitals often leads to loss of local control, loss of local jobs, increase in costs and reduction of services to low income patients.
The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21, at the Northeast Public Library, 1241 Military Cutoff Road. Speakers will include North Carolina State Treasurer Dale Folwell and a North Carolina health care economist. The event will include a question and answer session. No IDs Will Be Required for March 3 Primary Election
On December 31, U.S. District Judge Lorretta Biggs slapped an injunction on the controversial North Carolina law requiring voters to show an approved photo ID before voting in the state, and the injunction will prevent the law from being enforced for the March 3 primary. Judge Biggs' injunction is not the first time the courts have stepped in to thwart attempts place unneeded restrictions on the right to vote. Biggs, like previous jurists, ruled that the ID law passed by the Republican-majority state legislature in 2018 had the same "racially discriminatory taint" of past rules that had a disproportionate effect on minority voters. Republicans across the country have promoted voter ID laws as a way to decrease alleged voter fraud. Multiple studies have concluded that at-the-polls voter fraud is extremely rare, and the impact of voter ID laws is primarily to suppress votes by citizens who are more likely to vote for Democrats.
The North Carolina primary is especially critical this year. It occurs on "Super Tuesday" when 16 states will make their choice of Presidential candidates known. North Carolina is the third most populous state voting on March 3, and the Presidential primary winner here will walk away with 110 delegates, according to the state Democratic party. Republicans are appealing Biggs' ruling in hopes of reinstating their voter ID law later.
Important Precinct Training On Tuesday
Our organizing for 2020 begins with precinct organization in February and this year we have less flexibility than we do in non-presidential election years. Accordingly, we urge you to attend the Precinct Organization Training on Tuesday. At the meeting, Susanne Werner will discuss how to organize and motivate your precinct, and will distribute important information including calling lists, proposed agenda, sign-in lists, and sustaining fund goals. Important NHCDP Meeting Monday January 27th
We need a quorum at our Monthly Meeting On January 27 to elect two new SEC members. This is important in this presidential election year because the SEC votes to elect delegates to the Democratic National Convention, among other things. Accordingly, if you are a Precinct Chair, Precinct Vice Chair or SEC member, it is important for you to attend so we have a quorum for the vote. If you cannot attend, you can send a proxy with a written statement from you that they are authorized to vote your proxy. See time and place details below.

The North Carolina organization formed to encourage voter education and participation will hold a volunteer training event to begin the 2020 campaign season. New Hanover Democrats March In MLK Parade -- January 20

New Hanover Democrats are proud to participate in the parade. We will have a trolley, so you can choose to march or ride or some of both. Dress for the weather - it is usually colder than we expect. We expect some local and state candidates to join us in the parade. After the parade, we will warm up at Foxes Boxes at 622 N 4th St, Wilmington with Rachel's gumbo and cash bar for adult beverages. Important New Hanover County Democratic Party Monthly Meeting -- January 27

Regular meetings are held the third Monday of the month. Our meeting this month is a week late because of MLK day. We need a quorum at this meeting because we will elect two SEC members to fill vacant seats, so we are asking all precinct chairs, vice chairs, and SEC members to attend.
FP07 "Lit Drop" Events -- February 1 and 2

Because this is a presidential election year, the rules are a bit different. Instead of a ten day period for precinct organization, there is a single day, February 15th. There is only one make-up day, March 14th, for precincts that fail to organize in February.
