Inaugural National Summit on Civic Education
JMC Gathers Top Civic Education Leaders and Philanthropists to 'Move the Needle' on Improving Civics Nationwide
[link removed]

Dear Friends,

I'd like to update you on the recent success of the Jack Miller Center's inaugural National Summit on Civic Education. Held in November at George Washington's Mount Vernon ([link removed]) estate, nearly 100 civic organization leaders, researchers, and philanthropists gathered and discussed the current education landscape and how we can strengthen and scale our efforts. Photos from the event can be found here. ([link removed])

I am grateful to the Considine Family Foundation for sponsoring the two-day event. I would also like to extend my thanks to DonorsTrust, Philanthropy Roundtable, and the Bradley Impact Fund for their partnership. You can read the full ([link removed]) ([link removed]) conference agenda here. ([link removed])

Across all areas of expertise, participants agreed: the state of American civic education is urgent and requires swift action.

Robert Pondiscio ([link removed]) , Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and education reform expert, gave the opening talk, which summed up our issue at hand. He noted that school culture seems to almost "revel in the bad and the broken."

Pondiscio discussed the need to move beyond the current "pedagogy of the depressed" and cultivate a spirit of gratitude in the classroom.

"It should not be a controversial notion to say that public education must proceed from a moral commitment grounded in optimism, and yes, patriotism," said Pondiscio. "You have to love something before you set about fixing it." Click here to watch Pondiscio's address >> ([link removed])

Pondiscio emphasized that cultivating gratitude does not translate to teaching "mindless nationalism or sanitized history," rather that in a well-functioning society, "gratitude for what is working and outrage for what is not are equally important."

Many teachers, citizens, and policymakers want to reform the way we are teaching our nation's history and founding principles, Parents across political affiliations and ethnicities agree, according to a recent national survey ([link removed]) commissioned by the Jack Miller Center.

Still, improving civics on a national scale remains in the hands of organizations and individuals committed to creating the change.
Announcing the 2023 National Summit on Civic Education

national summit opening pledge of allegience

Civic leaders, organizations, and philanthropists have long needed to come together to strengthen our shared cause. The Jack Miller Center is well-positioned to bring these important people and groups together and find ways to address challenges and collaborate.

As a result of the first summit's resounding success, I am pleased to announce the second annual National Summit on Civic Education will be held on November 9-10, 2023 at the historic Union League of Philadelphia ([link removed]) .

Plans for the event are in the works and just part of our 2023 preparations for scaling up our K-12 and higher education programs nationally. More to come.

Thanks, as always, to you, for your friendship and support.

We Need Your Support: Help Reform Civic Education
Across our country, too many educational institutions are neglecting, distorting, or denigrating America’s principles and its history, and too many Americans are uninformed about the core ideas of self-government.
The consequences are all too apparent: We see a diminishing attachment to America’s revolutionary recognitions of separation of powers, limited government, federalism, constitutionalism, and commitment to the dignity of the individual.

Our people are losing sight of the shared points of reference that have forged common bonds among citizens throughout our history—and that have allowed us to understand and to pass along the meaning of America.

Yet, there is hope. To date, more than 1.65 million students across the country have learned about the American political tradition from our partner professors and K-12 teacher alumni.

The year 2022 has been our most transformational one to date, as we dramatically scale up our K-12 and higher education programming around the country to meet the demands of this critical moment. And in 2023, we're prepared to work even smarter and harder. We can reach every state and tens of millions of students with your support.

Join us, and make your tax-deductible donation today. Your gift, large or small, will be a crucial investment in the future of our country. This will be one of the most important inheritances you leave your children, your grandchildren, and their children.

About the Jack Miller Center
The Jack Miller Center is a nationwide network of political scholars, historians, and civics teachers who seek to pass along the American political tradition to the next generation.

We have three strategies to pursue this mission:
1. build and sustain a community of scholars in the fields of American political thought and history;
2. restore the teaching of American citizenship in K-12 schools that centers on the country’s history, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and other foundational texts in the American tradition; and
3. partner with organizations and philanthropists to advance civic education that is grounded in America’s founding principles and history.

We are building a movement of educators and citizens to advance the principles of equality, liberty, and opportunity that lie at the heart of the American political tradition.
