Dear John,

In an annual tradition, ADL pauses at the end of December to take stock of the moments and people who shaped the last 12 months — for better or for worse.

For 2022, we compiled two Top 10 lists for you: One that celebrates moments of hope, progress and resilience and one looking back on the moments of hurt and hate — whether antisemitism, racism, extremism or other — that shaped the world.

Top 10 Moments of Inspiration and Hope in 2022

As 2022 comes to an end and we ready ourselves for 2023, ADL looks back on the moments from the last year that gave us some light, hope and inspiration.

In the last year we witnessed many heartening and historical events: The confirmation of the first Black woman Supreme Court justice, landmark pieces of legislation that codified gay marriage into law and made lynching a federal hate crime, the enduring bravery of the Ukrainian and the Iranian people fighting for freedom against tyranny — just to name a few.

Here’s our list of the Top Ten most inspiring moments of 2022, as selected and curated by members of ADL’s staff, in chronological order. (

Top Ten Heartbreaking Moments of Hate in 2022 and How ADL Responded

The year 2022, like the year before, was marked by a series of heart-wrenching setbacks in the fight against hate.

Antisemitism and other forms of hate showed no signs of abating, as high-profile celebrities gave voice to hateful canards (as recently as this past week) and hateful incidents continued to target marginalized communities across the country and worldwide. There were brazen acts of hate, such as the Buffalo supermarket shooting, the Colleyville hostage crisis and the antisemitic Boston Mapping Project; and there were disappointing developments such as a rise in attacks against the LGBTQ+ community and the banning of a Holocaust story in Tennessee.

Each of these ranked as one of ADL’s heartbreaking moments of hate in 2022. Here’s our list of the Top Ten, as curated by ADL’s experts and staff. (

Thank you for helping us to keep Fighting the Good Fight, as we work vigilantly to bring more moments of hope to the coming year.
Sincerely,

Jonathan Greenblatt
