380 million tons of plastic is produced every year, and up
to 50 percent of that is from single-use products that are used
for mere minutes, and then discarded. And while plastic might
break down into smaller pieces, it takes hundreds of years to
fully decompose.
Instead, far too often, marine animals eat it.
Turtles believe plastic bags are jellyfish. Birds pick up
pieces of plastic and feed them to their young. This plastic
ingestion can cause intestinal blockages, malnutrition, toxic
poisoning, and eventually death. Thousands of marine animals are
killed every year by plastic pollution.
