Unrelenting drought, armed conflict, and a pervasive hunger crisis have been plaguing Somalia for years. Now, the country stands on the brink of famine – and millions of lives hang in the balance.
But John, we at the UNFPA are there now, providing essential reproductive health services as the country spirals into famine. Even though a famine hasn’t been officially declared, the crisis in Somalia is incredibly dire. Some estimates say as many people may end up starving as in an “official” famine. To make matters worse, we received just 32% of the funds we needed in 2022 to meet the health needs of women and girls in Somalia.
That’s why we are asking you if you can be there for women and girls and help us meet our $100,000 End-of-Year fundraising goal. Women and girls surviving emergencies like the near-famine in Somalia shouldn’t have to worry if they will survive childbirth and be able to raise their family or where their next set of birth control pills will come from or if they’ll have the menstrual pads they need to manage their period.
Your donation funds UNFPA midwives like Fatima, who is on the frontlines of the hunger crisis in Somalia. Day-in and day-out she cares for pregnant women who are dangerously malnourished, mothers, whose newborns are fighting for their lives in the ICU, and, survivors of rape, who desperately need mental health counseling and hope after a brutal attack.
Fatima remembers caring for one girl as she became a mother at just 14-years-old. The girl – who was also a survivor of female genital mutilation and was severely anemic – had a complicated delivery that left both mother and baby struggling to breathe.
“I immediately resuscitated both the baby and the mother and they survived because I was there to attend to them,” Fatima remembers. “It may seem like this mother and baby were lucky to be attended by a qualified midwife, but I want their life to have nothing to do with luck. I want this assistance to be made routinely available for everyone.”
I am so grateful to have you on this team, John. Thank you for being there, no matter what.
Sincerely,
-- Anu Surendran
