Dear friend of press freedom,

One dozen journalists have been arrested or detained in the U.S. this year alone. According to our U.S. Press Freedom Tracker, the vast majority of these incidents occurred at protests, and each one poses a critical threat to free press.

Can you donate to Freedom of the Press Foundation so we can keep guard on the rights of journalists and whistleblowers in 2023?

Help us end 2022 on a strong foot

When detained, even briefly, journalists lose the ability to freely cover important stories. Like this summer, when three journalists were detained while covering a demonstration at the Arizona Capitol:

Photographer Jack Sorgi told the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker dozens of troopers swarmed the crowd and ordered everyone to the ground. He kneeled and held his press credentials in front of him.

“Get all of the way down man, all the way down,” a state trooper told him. “I don’t care what your pass says.”

As you can see in this video, Sorgi laid down on his stomach and attempted to continue filming, but was told by the trooper to get his hands on the ground as well.

“He grabbed the lens hood of my camera and forced it all the way to the concrete,” Sorgi said.

Sorgi was later released without being processed.

Protect journalists doing their job

Here’s the good news: You can safeguard press freedom and bolster the work of fearless journalists by supporting our mission.

All donations to Freedom of the Press Foundation will be DOUBLED by a few of our generous donors until Dec. 31.

It’s no exaggeration to say that we would not be able to do our work without financial support from press freedom advocates like you.

Thank you, again, for all you do to advance press freedom.

All the best,

Trevor Timm
