Fred Guttenberg here. I wish Lucy McBath and I would have never had to meet, but now that we are in this fight together for gun safety reform, I am thankful every day that I know Lucy.

You see, we are members of the same movement: Parents who have lost their children way too soon due to gun violence.

My daughter Jaime was only 14 years old when she went to school at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School one morning. She never came home – she was among the victims of the Parkland Shooting. In the aftermath, we saw gross inaction and “condolences” from our legislators in Florida and Washington. It made me so angry. I knew I couldn’t accept the status quo. I had to stand up and demand better. That’s how I (and so many other Parkland parents) met Lucy – she reached out with no agenda, only to see how she could offer us support.

Gun safety advocacy is personal for Lucy, too. After her son Jordan was murdered, she turned her pain into purpose, becoming a staunch activist for sweeping gun reforms at the state and federal level. Then, she ran for Congress – and she won! Lucy became a voice for all of us who’ve been impacted by gun violence, showing the country that we can build our own political power when we stand up and demand better for our families.

Lucy has been a leader for the gun reform movement in Washington D.C. for years, and was just elected to her third term in the House of Representatives. We have the potential to pass major legislation in upcoming years, such as a federal assault weapons ban, but we know that NRA-backed Republicans are going to fight back at every turn.
