In February of 2016, as Donald Trump was beginning his hate-filled rise to the White House, the head of CBS News made a statement to an audience of Wall Street bankers that sums up everything wrong with the corporate news media, which still resonates:
Donald Trump’s campaign “may not be good for America," he said. "But it's damn good for CBS.”
And now, all these years later, even after the impeachments, the tax fraud convictions, and the January 6 insurrection . . . the corporate media might be worse than ever. Trump is out of office—at least for now—but for-profit news outlets are still cashing in on corruption and right-wing grift while the planet burns and democracy suffers.
Common Dreams was founded more than 20 years ago to fill the gaps created by the corporate media's failure to provide news that informs, inspires, and ignites change for the common good.
