Hi John,
My name is Masoud — Like most of you, I juggle a lot of responsibilities at work and home, but, as I am sure most of you do, I also try to squeeze in time for something more, for making a difference. I try to make a difference by volunteering as a board member at NIAC and by working with the NIAC team. In this role, I have a close view of, and influence on, the organization’s strategic direction, and how we use our limited resources to achieve those goals, especially at a critical time in our community.
Like many of you, I'm in awe of the courage and bravery of the Iranian people who, in their 120+ year old struggle for freedom and democracy, have once again flooded the streets across Iran with one message: woman, life, freedom. This rallying cry has spurred a revolution in Iran that the world is watching. It's been motivating. It's also been emotional.
John, the Iranian regime has killed hundreds of protesters (even children), arrested over 18,000 people (including children dragged away from their schools), and executed multiple activists after sham trials. Many of those arrested remain at serious risk of torture, execution, or long prison terms. With those prospects, it's no wonder that NIAC has been working around the clock to find ways to drive policy wins in the U.S. that would benefit the Iranian people.
From securing increased internet freedom (which would make it easier for the Iranians to share the news of the revolution) to pushing for the successful removal of Iran from the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women, our advocacy efforts have worked. Lawmakers and key administration officials listen to us when we mobilize and organize our community.
That's what gives me hope for a better future in Iran – because we're supporting the efforts of Iranian people who are fighting on the ground in Iran with meaningful, tangible policy outcomes here in the U.S.
I hear from many of you on how NIAC could do better. I agree 100% and we are constantly pushing ourselves to do just that. NIAC is very much a work-in-progress, that’s why I am spending a lot of time volunteering for a better NIAC. But that work takes more than volunteer work — trust me — I see the budget. That's why I'm asking you to give to this organization who, despite much misinformation online, has persevered and stayed focused on its North Star: giving voice to its members and the Iranian-American community. Please join me, and countless other Iranian Americans, and make a 100% tax-deductible contribution toward our end-of-year fund by midnight tonight. [[link removed]]
