A collage of images of different sizes, interspersed with small blue squares: citizen scientists on the river to measure emissions, homeowners outside their house, a college student in front of the Cathedral of Learning, facing away from the camera but holding a small mirror which shows their eye, a person standing outside their home showing an image on their phone of a plume of smoke from the US Steel plant, a person looking down and away from the camera in gentle light, parents flanking their child, a local bridge shot from below, a group of soccer players at practice.
Dear Reader,

2022 was a year of trials, triumphs and changing times. Today, we look back.
From a collapsed bridge to converging pandemics and changing social landscapes, our newsroom reported from the frontlines of many of the biggest news stories of 2022 in Allegheny County.

We investigated the disparities created and perpetuated by property tax assessment laws. We covered the Fern Hollow Bridge collapse. We broke news about facial recognition technology at Carnegie Mellon University. We covered anti-violence efforts, an election that will shape the commonwealth and the local fallout of the Roe v. Wade reversal.

All in all, we worked to respond to incredible events with thoughtful, useful journalism tailored to the Pittsburgh region. We are grateful for the community of over 1,100 members who helped make these stories possible.

Time and time again, our journalism informs members of the public, so that they may act — whether that be by voting, citing our reporting in public meetings, organizing a protest or simply rethinking assumptions. If you appreciate this public-service reporting, you can help keep it going and power our 2023 coverage by making a triple-matched gift of support before Dec. 31
