This year, Equality Federation created a new advocacy program to amplify the states’ political power. We launched the Trans Defense Campaign, a $1 million effort to demonstrate the unified strength of the state-based movement to defeat anti-LGBTQ+ bills and win public support for transgender people.

* The Trans Defense Campaign helped our state partners defeat 87% of the 330 total anti-LGBTQ+ bills.
* Of the 110 anti-trans bills introduced, only 16 passed.
* Our Call Fund helped kill 14 anti-transgender bills in 11 states, including athlete bans, healthcare bans, panic defense bans, and anti-trans education bills.
* In the states where we ran call campaigns to legislators, only 3 anti-transgender bills passed.

After this year’s bruising legislative session, we knew this election cycle would be vital to LGBTQ+ rights and the future of democracy in this country. We made investments in 16 states of $148,000 in voter engagement grants. We saw big wins in those states:
* In Michigan, the #HateWontWin campaign turned out voters in record numbers to change the control of the Michigan Senate and House, creating a pro-equality, Democratic trifecta.
* Wisconsin avoided Republican supermajorities in their legislature.
* In Minnesota, pro-equality Democrats now control the House, Senate, and Governor’s office.

With upwards of $46 million spent on anti-trans advertisements targeting communities of color in over 10 states in the midterms, we know our opposition isn’t stopping its attack on our community any time soon.

It is more important than ever to educate the public about transgender people, mobilize pro-equality voters, and resource our state partners for the fights ahead. And that’s what we’re going to do.
