Hi John, it’s Mary. I want to go ahead and warn you that this will probably be the longest email I’ll ever send you—but it could also be one of the most important.
I’m sure you’re busy, so if you don’t have time to read the whole thing, I hope you’ll pitch in $5, $10 or even $25 to help Democracy Defense Fund hit our $100,000 End-of-Year fundraising goal and support pro-democracy candidates up and down the ballot in 2023.
But if you’re willing to hear me out for just a few minutes, I’d like to lay out how our organization plans on defending democracy and upholding our Constitution with your continued support...
Step 1:
Support Pro-Democracy Candidates Up & Down the Ballot
Did you know 96% of the U.S. House races in 2022 were won by the candidate who spent the most money? NINETY-SIX PERCENT!
It’s ridiculous, I know. But the reality of our current political system is whichever candidate raises the most money will very likely win.
That’s why I launched Democracy Defense Fund—to support pro-democracy candidates with the resources they need to get to Washington, uphold their Constitutional oath to defend our democracy, and keep our country safe from the extremists who are trying to destroy it.
But the GOP just re-took House control because the far-right, anti-democracy movement did a better job at giving their candidates the $$ to win the most important races.
That’s why I’m sending emails like this one, John: Because we need you to chip in $10, $25 or whatever you can afford before Saturday’s End-of-Year fundraising deadline to help our nation elect the leaders who will defend our democracy in Washington.
Step 2:
Flip GOP-Controlled State Legislatures to Defend Democracy at the State Level
The fight to defend democracy doesn’t only happen at the federal level in Washington, John. In fact, more than 440 voter suppression bills were introduced across 49 different states in 2021—yet another attack on our Constitutional rights by those in power.
That’s why we are focused on investing in the local races that impact the electoral certification process and the outcome of elections. That means directing expenditures into flippable state legislatures all across the country and winning key Secretary of State races in swing states.
So please, if you’re committed to fighting for our most basic freedoms and fundamental rights at the grassroots level, I ask that you please donate $25 or any other amount toward our $100,000 End-of-Year goal before Saturday’s critical fundraising deadline.
Step 3:
Focus on the Issues That Matter
Safeguarding the right to vote, guaranteeing free and fair elections, protecting abortion access, lowering healthcare costs, rebuilding our nation's economy—all of these issues will be decided in the coming years, John.
At Democracy Defense Fund, we will always be straight with you. We’re going to support the most qualified candidates in the most important races that will have the biggest impact on your day-to-day lives.
That means focusing on the real issues that matter to voters, not getting swept up in the fights among partisan special interest groups and wealthy, D.C. insiders.
Our organization answers to you, John—but right now, we run the risk of failing to execute our step-by-step plan if we don’t hit our $100,000 End-of-Year goal.
So, I’ll ask one more time: Will you please add $25 or whatever you can before Saturday’s crucial midnight deadline and defend democracy from those who seek to destroy it?
Thanks for your support,
Dr. Mary L. Trump
