Happy New Year, John.
We’re only a few days into a new year, and the news cycle is dominated by reports of Trump’s impeachment and an impending war. But we must remain vigilant and focused on the issues affecting our people and communities. It’s a new decade, a fresh start, and another opportunity for us to build on the foundation for Black liberation. Will you start your new year with a $5 donation to support our continued fight? If you can’t decide now, please keep reading.
Last year exposed some of the most toxic and harmful ways that institutions and corporations attempted to target, surveil, silence, oppress, and marginalize us:
- Documents revealed an ongoing FBI program code-named "Iron Fist," designed to infiltrate and surveil Black anti-police-violence movements, while ignoring the active threats of white nationalist.1
- Our basic human rights, security, and privacy were threatened by the unregulated use of facial recognition technology, resulting in anti-Black policing.2
- Comcast petitioned the Supreme Court to challenge one of the oldest and most important civil rights laws in the country: the Civil Rights Act of 1866.3
- Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post attacked a program designed to create awareness of cultural biases and dismantle the culture of white supremacy in NYC schools.4
These are only a few examples of why we must start the new year with a renewed commitment to fight systems of oppression on all fronts: government, technology, media, culture, and education. Will you donate $5 to support this urgent work? If you still can’t decide, John, continue reading to learn how we plan to create our vision of the future.
Thanks to your support we had major wins last year that changed many of the written and unwritten rules of our society, but we still have so much to do. This year we plan to:
- Call on members of the US House of Representatives to use every tool at their disposal to demand the FBI completely discontinue their use of the “Black Identity Extremist” designation and dismantle the "Iron Fist" program.
- Pressure New York City legislators to enforce oversight and regulations on the use of facial recognition technology, and support the Public Oversight of Surveillance Technology (POST) Act, which requires the NYPD to disclose how it utilizes electronic surveillance tools.5
- Continue to pressure Comcast board members and executives to rescind their challenge of bedrock Civil Rights laws.
- Demand a better and more diverse curriculum for public school children.
Thank you John, for reading this far. It’s members like you who take the time to act and support our work that allows us to continue fighting to change the written and unwritten rules of society.
Start the new year with a $5 donation and support this urgent work so we can move closer to realizing the justice we all deserve.
Until justice is real,
