In an administration filled with ethics scandals and contempt for the rule of law, Kellyanne Conway still manages to stand out.
Conway has repeatedly violated the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from using their office for partisan political purposes. In June 2019, the Office of Special Counsel made the unprecedented recommendation that Conway be removed from federal service for her repeated and egregious violations, following multiple CREW complaints.
But President Trump refused to fire her. And Conway has continued to use her Twitter account to violate the Hatch Act regularly in the months since. In order to enforce their findings, OSC should have filed a complaint with the Merit Systems Protection Board, which could take disciplinary action.
OSC acted courageously to call for Conway’s firing, but because they failed to file the legally-required complaint, allowing Trump to ignore their recommendation and Conway to continue to repeatedly violate the law, we’re suing to compel OSC to file an MSPB complaint and ensure Conway is held accountable. Read more about CREW’s lawsuit here.
Conway is just one piece of the Trump administration’s ethics crisis, which extends from Hatch Act violations all the way to the president’s egregious abuses of power that led to his impeachment last month. At CREW, we’ll continue pushing for accountability at all levels, because we refuse to stand by while this administration continues damaging our democracy.
