Dear John
For a long time now, the powers that be in Washington have told us the same old story about what it takes to win an election.
In order to raise the money it takes to compete, they say, you need to accept donations from massive super PACs and elite corporate donors. Simply put, you need to sell out.
If you are an insurance, weapons, or fossil fuel executive trying to bribe politicians to do your dirty work, it is very convenient for people to believe your money is necessary.
But here’s the thing. I don’t believe it. I never have.
And neither should you.
Can I count on you to make a contribution to our campaign today?
Just look at the numbers. Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren hauled in a combined $55.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2019, which was nearly $10 million more than Donald Trump raised during the same period. Last summer, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez outraised every other House member while also swearing off super PACs and large corporate donors.
The thing is, grassroots fundraising is viable when campaigns and candidates make the effort to embrace solutions that match the crisis level of the problems we face. Lukewarm responses to our climate crisis, our healthcare crisis, our student debt crisis, do not generate grassroots support, and that’s why middle-of-the-road politicians turn to Big Money to fund their campaigns.
But this campaign is your campaign. That’s why I support Medicare for All, a Green New Deal and eliminating student debt. I won’t dance around the issues and I won’t take the side of corporate interests, because I am not beholden to them, I am beholden to you.
It’s small dollar donors like you, John, who are destroying the corporate-sponsored myth that selling out is a winning strategy. You are one of the millions of Americans who are sick and tired of business as usual in Washington. You are one of the millions of Americans who believe everyday Americans deserve to be represented by everyday Americans, not those of giant corporations and the ultra-wealthy.
Donate today to show the Establishment that we’re taking our democracy back.
This is a campaign funded by people like you. Not rich donors. Not lobbyists and super PACs. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Thank you for being part of this people-powered movement.
In Solidarity,
