Happy Holidays from Border Angels💛

PROGRAM UPDATES:
Water Drops:

We are extremely excited to be back in the desert with volunteers for our Water Drops! This past Saturday we took a small but mighty group to leave water and supplies in the desert. We were also able to collect trash and previously consumed items along this route.
Re-opening all of our programs has been a goal of ours for some time, after having to be far from our volunteers for the entirety of the pandemic. We cannot express how much it means to us to continue our mission of love alongside the people who make this all possible!

We also want to thank our supporters who donated hand-knitted beanies and socks to leave in our care packages, as well as one volunteer who drove from Tijuana to donate gallons of water and express to us how much this program means to her, as well as how personally connected she is to our work. Being back in person surrounded by our communities and being part of a network of community organizers really fills our hearts.

Thanks again to those who participated for being so focused, engaged, and respectful of the space, and to all of those who reached out with interest in joining. We will be announcing our next drop at the beginning of next year, be sure to keep an eye out!

A huge thank you and shoutout to Eddie and Undefeated for driving down to our office last week and bringing new shoes, shirts, and hoodies for migrant families in the Tijuana shelters.

We are excited to partner with Eddie and the rest of the team for upcoming trips to TJ to distribute these much-needed donations.

If you have physical donations for us you can email us at [email protected] or call us at 619-487-0249, we will be back in office and receiving them January 3rd.

A HUGE thank you to Dr. Mireles-Toumayan for collecting donations for the shelters in Tijuana. We are so grateful for her hard work and driving down a truck full from Santa Monica.

This was such a large donation that Maria Galleta from Madres Deportadas en Accion was also able to receive many winter items for the migrant families she supports!

Thank you to them and to all of you who have sent packages over for our Winter Drive.

A huge thank-you to our supporters
We are so grateful for not only your support and donations, but for the in-pour of kind words! The holiday season is a strong reminder of why we do the work that we do. Above all, Border Angels remains committed to a mission of love, active love turning kindness into action.

We truly have the best supporters, and cherish everyone’s stories that connect them to our work. Thank you all for focusing on what connects us instead of what divides us. KINDNESS IS COOL🖤 🦋

News Spotlight:

The U.S. asks court to end asylum limits, with a short delay
Texas dispatched National Guard troops to the border, and San Diego businesses anticipated a wave of Christmas shoppers from Mexico, as tens of thousands of asylum-seekers at the border waited for a Supreme Court ruling that could allow them to enter the United States.

The U.S. government asked the Supreme Court not to lift the limits before Christmas, in a filing a day after Chief Justice John Roberts issued a temporary order to keep the pandemic-era restrictions in place. Before Roberts issued that order, they had been slated to expire Wednesday.

Under the restrictions, officials have expelled asylum-seekers inside the United States 2.5 million times, and turned away most people who requested asylum at the border, on grounds of preventing the spread of COVID-19 under a public health rule called Title 42. Both U.S. and international law guarantee the right to claim asylum.

Title 42 to remain in place for now as Chief Justice John Roberts temporarily freezes order meant to end it
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts on Monday put a temporary hold on the termination of a controversial Trump-era immigration policy known as Title 42 that was set to end on December 21, leaving it in place for now.

But in a brief order Roberts signaled that the court wants to act quickly and asked the Biden administration to respond by 5 p.m. ET Tuesday to an emergency appeal filed by a group of Republican-led states.

The brief order from Roberts means the policy that allows officials to swiftly expel migrants at the US border will stay in effect at least until the justices decide the emergency application. The order does not necessarily reflect the final outcome of the case.

The states had raced to the Supreme Court earlier in the day in an emergency bid to keep in place a Trump-era immigration policy that is set to go off the books Wednesday.
