Biologists at the Wyoming Game and Fish Department know a significant amount of information about mule deer and what impacts their overall success from decades of research and data collection. Through their research they are well aware weather, habitat and chronic wasting disease affect Wyoming?s mule deer populations. These environmental factors play a significant role in the population fluctuation of mule deer. *But in the last 30 years, mule deer populations have declined to a point that is worrisome to wildlife managers and the public. Game and Fish wildlife habitat management areas beginning to close for winter

Many of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department Wildlife Habitat Management Areas are closing to human presence ? or already have ?? for the season to provide protections for wildlife on their winter ranges. The majority of WHMAs close or have restrictions for the winter annually.?*Protecting crucial habitat for wildlife is one of the main reasons the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission invests in land throughout Wyoming. New statewide nongame bird biologist named at Game and Fish
Zach Wallace

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department recently selected a new statewide nongame bird biologist. *Zach Wallace, who previously served as the biometrician for the Wyoming Natural Diversity Database at the University of Wyoming, will guide Game and Fish?s conservation strategies and research on nongame bird species. Game and Fish Commission approves acquisition of Ellis Ranch

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission met in Rock Springs for its November meeting. The Commission approved the acquisition of the Ellis Ranch Property in Johnson and Washakie counties. The property consists of 2,680 deed acres with additional access to 1,280 acres of Bureau of Land Management land.?*The property will be managed by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department as a wildlife habitat management area.? Wyoming?s big game populations are heading to their winter ranges. A drive down a number of the Cowboy State's highways this time of year can offer up a few sudden surprises without giving drivers much time to react. Wildlife-vehicle collisions are a simple reality in Wyoming. *Drivers are typically involved in more than 6,000 wildlife collisions on the state?s highways in a given year, with around 85 percent of the incidents involving mule deer.
