John,
It’s official — the Electoral Count Reform Act has been passed by Congress!
That’s right — Congress took bipartisan action on election reform and the new law is on its way to President Biden’s desk for his signature.
As you know, the attack on January 6 was whipped up by former President Donald Trump and his allies using loopholes in this little known 1887 law. Closing these gaps has been crucial for the future of our democracy.
The cynics said it could never be done. But we fought alongside our partners for almost two years and beat the odds.
We ran a comprehensive campaign to make this happen, which included:
- Executing an extensive advocacy campaign that included outreach to Republican and Democratic lawmakers in both the House and Senate;
- Running ads in key local and national outlets;
- Influencing the public discourse by writing opinion pieces from Issue One staff and members of our bipartisan National Council on Election Integrity;
- Hosting an event that featured discussions with Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) about the need for ECA reform.
YOU helped us do all of that. YOU helped make this happen. You supported our efforts by donating, sending letters to your senators and representatives, and calling them when we really needed to apply the pressure and ensure they heard that Americans across the country and political spectrum wanted this critical reform passed.
Thank you again for all you did to help make this happen.
Now we’re gearing up for 2023 where we’ll fight for more election funding for election officials across the country, expanded election worker protections, and build a nationwide movement for reforms to fix our broken political system and build an inclusive democracy that works for everyone.
Glad we’re in this fight together,
Elise Wirkus Legislative Director
