John, great news: Congress has sent President Joe Biden legislation that will protect our democracy against insurrections – like the deadly January 6th attack.
Thanks to your advocacy and support, the 2024 Electoral Vote count will be conducted under clear and straightforward rules – free from the loopholes that Donald Trump and his co-conspirators exploited in their shameful plot to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
This bill will ensure that the Electoral College votes tallied by Congress reflect the election results of each state’s popular vote for president.
Let’s be clear – this is a step in the right direction, but nowhere near what is necessary to defend our democracy from the threats it faces.
Because despite this positive result, Congress will leave town with far too much left undone, like the Freedom to Vote Act, which would ensure “We The People” – and nobody else – make the decisions that matter in our government.
And, they’ll leave unanswered the pressing need to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act – which would restore crucial protections against voter suppression laws like those recently passed in states like Georgia, Florida, and Texas –
But because there are not 10 Senate Republican votes for even these basic pro-democracy protections, passing these bills will require modernizing Senate rules to end the Jim Crow filibuster – which is holding up countless priorities that the American people support.
I don't have to tell you that the fight for democracy sometimes feels like one step forward, two steps back. But we keep the fight going because it is too important to ever stop.
John, we will have our work cut out for us next year – because our work to defend and expand our democracy must continue.
There’s still critically important work to do to shore up our democracy against these new threats – and to truly live up to the promise of a government where all of us have a say in our future.
We here at Common Cause are extremely grateful to know you are in this fight with us – and that we can count on your dedication, your advocacy, and your action in the coming months and years to defend the values we share.
Thanks for all you do,
Aaron Scherb, Senior Director of Legislative Affairs
