Breaking News: Victory on the FDA Modernization Act!
Dear John,
It’s remarkable news. Thrilling news. Humane news.
I’m so excited to tell you the details.
After a two-year campaign by the Center for a Humane Economy,
Congress has passed the FDA Modernization Act 2.0 to eliminate an archaic and inhumane animal-testing mandate for experimental drugs!
President Biden will sign it into law within a few hours.
When we work together, we can achieve monumental, tangible things for animals.
This is the most important policy related to animal testing in our nation’s history.
We did it together, and it is a moment to celebrate.
So many of you told your lawmakers that you’ve had enough of needless animal testing and government policies that require animal testing for new drug development protocols, even when morally and scientifically superior test methods are available.
This new law will reboot our national policies on drug development.
It will help patients in need of treatments and cures. And it will spare millions of animals from becoming yet more helpless collateral damage of what’s been an archaic process.
Animal testing for drug development is the largest category of animal testing, with pharma companies, contract labs, government agencies, and academic institutions tormenting beagles, primates, and countless other animals even though testing on animals does not typically forecast the human reaction to drugs.
The animals get the torture; patients suffer a range of adverse reactions from improperly screened drugs.
We want to thank you for raising your voice and demanding change and helping us get this bill over the finish line.
We want you to know that you are part of the most effective animal protection group in the nation.
This is what happens when you invest in our work. As the end of the year approaches, we ask you to donate to us so we can deliver these big results for animals on many other fronts.
When we move in the same direction, we can persuade Congress and private industry to act in monumental ways for the health and well-being of people and animals in our nation.
For the animals,
Wayne Pacelle
President
P.S. If passing the FDA Modernization Act was not enough, let me also note to you that the legislation that passed Congress provides $5 million in new federal monies to develop even more alternative test methods, so we can expedite the end of the era of animal testing in the United States and throughout the world.
