During the campaign, George Santos told of a powerful family backstory. His campaign biography led with this: "George's grandparents fled Jewish persecution in Ukraine, settled in Belgium, and again fled persecution during WWII."

That was a lie — his grandparents’ involvement in the Holocaust was pure fiction.

According to the Forward newspaper, who researched genealogy and refugee records, "Santos is not Jewish — and lied about his family fleeing persecution during the war." CNN cited an expert who said, "There's no sign of Jewish and/or Ukrainian heritage."

This is outrageous. To exploit the murder of six million Jews to win an election is egregious and offensive.

Yesterday, I stood with Jewish leaders in the 3rd District to condemn these lies. Once again, I repeated our demands that he resign immediately.

If you haven't had a chance, sign the petition demanding his resignation here.

In addition, I announced a bill today that would make it a misdemeanor in Nassau County for any candidate or elected official to lie about their registered address, employment history, education, or income.

The ongoing revelations about Congressman-elect George Santos are outrageous. As incoming Democratic leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries said, "His whole life; made up!"

I've sent a letter to the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York asking for an investigation into whether federal crimes have been committed by Mr. Santos.

Meanwhile, for his part, Santos tweeted yesterday, "I have my story to tell and it will be told next week."

Next week?! It should not take him days to come clean and tell the truth.

I'll say it again: George Santos has disqualified himself from serving in public office and he should resign immediately.

Stay tuned.
